Terri A. Haack’s distinguished career spans more than 35 years in hotel and resort operations management, with nearly two decades based solely in resort community development, operations and real estate. In her current role as president of Terranea Resort, she is responsible for the overall operating performance of the 102-acre luxury destination, located along California’s coastline on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, just south of Los Angeles. Under her leadership, the resort employs more than 1,250 associates and continues to thrive as a top property – renowned for its natural beauty and stewardship, award-winning cuisine, unique enrichment programs and unrivaled guest service.
Haack joined Terranea as executive vice president and managing director in 2007, spearheading pre-construction operations for the $480 million property and guiding the resort’s acclaimed debut in June 2009. Prior to Terranea, Haack joined Destination Hotels in 2002 to oversee redevelopment of the 1,600-acre Wild Dunes Resort, located on Isle of Palms near Charleston, South Carolina. She was instrumental in the launch of Wild Dunes’ $200 million master plan, which featured a state-of-the-art conference center, an expansive spa and fitness facility, and more than 115 condo hotel units in a village retail setting. Additional duties spanned business development and acquisition, as well as regional operations responsibilities. Earlier in her career, Haack directed the repositioning of Kingsmill Resort as executive vice president and managing director for the luxury golf and spa resort, a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch, Inc., located in Williamsburg, Virginia. She jointly served on the board of directors for Busch Properties, Inc., the real estate division of Anheuser-Busch, Inc. Today, Haack is a shareholder with Lowe, the parent company of CoralTree Hospitality Group.
Haack’s exceptional career has garnered numerous accolades and awards of distinction for her service and leadership from across the lodging industry and the communities in which she has lived. She was named ‘Best Boss’ by the Los Angeles News Group’s Winning Workplaces Reader’s Choice Awards, and named a finalist in the Los Angeles Business Journal’s Women Making a Difference Awards. She is also the recipient of the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s (AH&LA) national award for General Manager of the Year, Large Property, and was selected as the General Manager of the Year for large properties by the California Hotel and Lodging Association (CH&LA). In addition, she was named one of the Top 25 Most Extraordinary Minds in Sales, Marketing and Revenue by the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International (HSMAI), received the Daily Breeze People of Distinction Award for the Business/Innovation Category and the Palos Verdes Chamber of Commerce Matt Brunning Award for Business Excellence, and named the Industry Service Award winner by Destination Hotels. In 2007, Haack became the first woman to receive AH&LA’s coveted Resort Executive of the Year award.
As a successful business leader, Haack blends her effective business vision with a passionate commitment to positively make a difference, both in the world of business and the community she serves. Haack continues to support local causes, spearheading numerous initiatives that preserve the natural, cultural and historic integrity of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, which is home to Terranea. She stays actively involved in local, regional, state and national legislation and policy. Since opening, the resort has remitted more than $30 million in Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) to the City of Rancho Palos Verdes. Terranea is regarded as a valuable part of the community thanks to Haack’s involvement in charitable and nonprofit partnerships, such as: Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Peninsula Education Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Art at Your Fingertips, Vistas for Children, Walk with Sally, Palos Verdes Chamber of Commerce, Harbor Interfaith Services, Rainbow Services, LA Biomed, and more.
Terranea’s business and community programs and efforts have been repeatedly acknowledged, garnering dozens of awards and accolades over the years including: being named one of the 500 Best Hotels in the World by Travel + Leisure; being recognized on the prestigious Gold List of the World’s Best Hotels and Resorts and as one of the Best Places on Earth by Conde Nast Traveler; ranking as one of the top ten resorts in Los Angeles by U.S. News & World Report; and receiving the Platinum Choice Award from Smart Meetings, the Gold Key Award from Meetings and Conventions and the Pinnacle Award from Successful Meetings. Terranea is also recognized as the “Top Employer in Los Angeles County” and “Best Hospitality Company to Work For,” from Los Angeles News Group; this is an award that Haack cherishes as it relates to the culture and environment that she and Lowe and CoralTree Hospitality Group have created for Terranea’s associates.
A longtime contributor to AH&LA, Haack currently serves on the organization’s Executive Committee and Board of Directors, and is Chairman of the Educational Foundation Scholarship Committee and Resort Committee; she is also the past Chairman and a member of the CH&LA Executive Committee. Additionally, she is a founding Board Member and President of the Women In Lodging Executive Council, and a member of the Board of Directors for Habitat For Humanity, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the long-term strategic planning board for Marymount California University.
Haack holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and a Master of Arts in Organizational Management. She is married to Doug Haack, a retired airline pilot and business owner, and their son Brian is a graduate of the University of Southern California.
